My Saxo P&L 2018

Since I last revealed by YTD performance back in October, my account has gone from strength to strength.

This time around I publish my P&L by cash returns.

Have achieved profits of approximately SGD12.1K this year.

You can also see my 2017 and 2016 performance on this account.

My most profitable products were Facebook CFDs, S&P500 Index CFDs and Ethereum ETF.

My least profitable products were AUDUSD, EURJPY and DBS CFDs.

I should try to learn the good habits of letting profits run, while reduce the poor habits of trying to profit with FX trades, which are must more challenging as an asset class.

Hopefully I can continue this rich vein of form into 2019 and make as much money as possible.

IceCap Asset Management: An Entire Generation Of Investment Professionals Has No Idea What's Coming

A lot of truth in this article.

To be clear – there’s now an entire generation of investment professionals around the world who’s entire career (both professional and academic) has occurred during a period dominated by:

- 0% interest rates
- Negative% interest rates
- QE and money printing
- Bank bailouts
- Sovereign debt bailouts

Why is this important?

This is important because the industry as a group creates, forms and distributes risk-return expectations for every dollar in the investment universe.

My Career Life Map

This was really interesting.

We were having our Leadership Academy training and one of the segments was to draw our own career life map to have a better retrospection of our careers, and also to share with our fellow colleagues. This made for a very good team-building event.

So I did.

Psychology Of A Market Cycle

This is very true!

31st IFTA Conference 2018

My company was one of the Gold sponsors of the 31st IFTA Conference 2018, held in Kuala Lumpur over last weekend.

IFTA stands for International Federation of Technical Analysts.

The event was so high profile, it was graced by Malaysian Prime Minister, Dr Mahathir Mohamad himself.

It was nice to have a sponsors' photo opportunity with him.

Some very good speakers and I was glad to be a part of this.

Prospect Capital (PSEC) Re-entry

I've invested in this US stock before and it is very high yielding, which is why it has always been attractive, even with the pitfalls that have plagued it.

See the various articles I have written here, here and here.

At it's 52-week low, it actually traded at the ultra low price of $5.51!

Now this latest article sums up why I'm back in at around $7.

Generally PSEC holds up well in a rising interest rate environment, which was why it hasn't been doing as well last few years.

Until now.

Now I will hold for a longer term and hopefully I can earn some capital gains along with the almost 11% monthly-paying dividend yield!

Huat ah!

Temasek Bonds - T2023

Who else is subscribed to this?

I'm not sure if there is a safer high-yielding Bond to buy right now.

At 2.7% coupon rate, this is nice to keep some cash that I don't need for the next 5 years.

Also something about Singapore pride to want to get a piece of this no matter how small, just so I can say I own Temasek Bonds :)

Fantastic effort by Temasek to liven up the local bond market.

Read more information about it here.

Looking for Gold to break higher in the coming weeks.

My Saxo PnL YTD 2018

Here's a snapshot of my PnL in my Saxo account since inception.

Really like the Saxo Account Management features.

Head and shoulders above the competition.

Interestingly, I have no positions in this account right now.

Short Tesla (TSLA) - Shorts Covered

So after I wrote that post.

Over that weekend, it was announced that the SEC had settled with Elon Musk.

Naturally when Monday opened, TSLA shares spiked.

I was lucky that I could get out with a slight profit, albeit losing the paper profit I carried over the weekend.

Oh well, tough luck, who would've thought they'd settle so quickly.

On to the next better trade idea!

2018 Dividend Accumulator September

A normal month this month. My dividend portfolio is growing, so I expect more dividends to flow in!

13 September $21.74
24 September $19.10
28 September $44.00

Total Dividends for September: $84.84

Total Dividends for 2018: $1,038.95
Average per Month: $86.58

Short Tesla (TSLA)

I went short TSLA a couple weeks ago at around $307.

I just cannot stand Elon Musk, it's CEO, and the fact that his charisma is probably the only reason this company with rotten fundamentals is worth this much in the stock market!

And then on Friday, the SEC probed Elon regarding his $420 tweet in August.

TSLA plummeted from around $310 to close around $264.

This morning, I'm reading news of a settlement having been reached.

Let's see how the market will react to this come Monday open.

Hopefully no significant spikes upwards :P

Ezion Holdings (5ME) - I Just Can't Take It No More

Today I disposed of ALL my Ezion holdings holdings.

It was A LOT of shares.

Plus I disposed of them at the day's low in the morning open.

At 0.071.

That's a huge realized loss for me.

I had a really hard think over the weekend about my holdings and how long I wanted to keep them.

In the end, better to cut my losses and pour all the remaining proceeds into growing my passive income portfolio.

Read how it all began here.

Been taking in a lot of losses lately.

Have to stem the tide.

Have to remain optimistic.

Have to reverse the trend.

Opened Position In Cryptocurrency Once More

Recently all cryptocurrencies have taken a huge beating. Bitcoin has dropped significantly from the giddy highs of $19K+ to the current $6K+.

I thought this was a good chance to get back into the cryptocurrency game.

I've always preferred Ethereum as an investment compared to Bitcoin.

So recently went in small into Ethereum Tracker ETF XBTE once more.

Long Facebook (FB) - Position Closed And Why 030818

So I blogged about taking a long position on FB just a few days ago.

You can read it here.

I also took a fairly large position using CFDs and that made the risk of holding the position very high. Firstly, on a 1:10 leverage, my losses would definitely exceed my base capital if FB continued to plummet. SEcondly, I was paying a very high cost of 3+%PA of CFD Financing. CFD Financing is the interest to be paid on the nominal value of the position when it is being held.

So I was holding a 500 FB share position with an average price of approximately USD$173. This meant that if I had to buy the actual stock, my investment commitment would have been $86,500. But using CFDs, I only needed a margin of $8,650 to open the position. CFD Financing worked out to about $10 per day, which is quite high.

As such, if I had, say, exactly $8,650 in my account (I'd be at 100% margin and Saxo risk management system would NEVER allow this without stopping me out), another 10% drop in FB stock price would simply wipe me out completely to $0.

Over the few days that I've held the stock, thankfully FB price went up. Eventually I closed it on Friday evening at a price of $178, earning about $5 X 500 = $2,500.

Not too shabby, but mainly to de-risk.

A good profit nonetheless!

Long Facebook (FB)

So the biggest news of last week was Facebook (FB) dropping almost 20% last week due to poor expected growth.

You can read all about it from so many various sources here, here and here.

For me, I came back in the evening and surfed through my Facebook news feed and then came across the famous Sean Seah of Value Investing College doing a live broadcast in a car about Facebook. He strongly recommends it and I really bought into his rationale of wide moat, growth forecast and the generally broad idea that no other company can replicate its current business model.

Immediately after that, I logged into my SaxoTrader account and bought Facebook at 176.75.

This position is suffering a slight loss right now, but let's see if we will see a relief rally or a further selldown in the coming week.

Fingers crossed!

How To Be Mentally Strong

Found this article on Forbes which I felt was super useful.

These are the 13 things they avoid:

1) Waste time feeling sorry for themselves

2) Give away their power

3) Shy away from change

4) Waste energy on things they can't control

5) Worry about pleasing others

6) Fear taking calculated risks

7) Dwell on the past

8) Make the same mistakes over and over

9) Resent other people's success

10) Give up after failure

11) Fear alone time

12) Feel the world owes them anything

13) Expect immediate results

Be mentally strong!!!

There has been an en bloc fever coming over Singapore for a few months now.

Many old HUDCs have successfully en bloc-ed, and many more and currently trying.

In the latest developments, the entire coastline of old condos along Marine Parade are seriously considering or polling for en bloc.

Neptune Court, Mandarin Gardens, Laguna Park and Lagoon View.

Let's see what happens over the next 12 months.
